All writer, Katie Heaney, could think about when it came to hypnosis was the hypnotist her college hired for entertainment. She never volunteered because she was sure it wouldn't work on her (and also afraid of what she might do if it did).
She was offered the opportunity to receive hypnosis from a woman who specializes in “virtual hypnotherapy.” An emerging trend in the hypnosis field where hypnosis sessions are conducted over video chat such as Skype, Zoom, FaceTime, or something else.
Although Katie would be safe in her own home, "Something about having to close my eyes made it feel so much more vulnerable than a regular therapy session."
Hypnosis may look like sleep (in fact, the word "hypno" means "sleep" in Latin), it is often compared to meditation or prayer like state. However, hypnosis is far easier because you are guided during the process. This is why you here terms like "guided meditation," "guided relaxation," and "creative visualization." All of these usually comprise hypnotic phenomena.
According to David Spiegel, a hypnotherapist and psychiatry professor at Stanford University, the primary effect of hypnosis is that it allows people to separate their physiological reactions from their psychological reactions. “Typically, when we're anxious about something, our bodies react to that,” he says. “Your muscles tense up, you may start to sweat, you breathe faster, and then you notice that, and you think, ‘Oh God, this is really bad,’ and then your body says, ‘Oh, now she’s feeling really bad.’ It’s kind of a snowball effect.” Hypnosis helps us to isolate our thoughts from our feelings, so to speak, so that we can think about what’s causing us stress without getting absorbed in our physical responses to that stress.
Katie went into her hypnosis experience as a nonbeliever, and it worked anyway, even over Skype. In the hypnosis field, this is a common, even hourly occurrence in our offices.
People come in as "their last resort" and wish it had been "their first choice."
